A confidential credit report of Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) intercepted by Today has confirmed reports that the state premier bank has approved and advanced ‘uncollateralised’ loans to some customers who are cronies of some members of the board.

Board Chairman of GCB, Daniel Owiredu, has been accused by some top officials of the bank of engaging in some banking irregularities since he doubles as Chairman of the Bank’s Credit Committee.

Some of these top officials have called on him to resign as the credit chairman due to the apparent conflict of interest situation.

The credit report, which covers the period 1st July, 2015 to 31st July, 2016 clearly points to some abnormal loan facilities advanced to some clients.

The loan facilities which are above GHC2 million include overdrafts, short, medium, long-term loans, seed fund guarantees etc.

Within the period, the Bank granted loans to the tune of GHC993,336,250 billion, and $76,935,103.90 million dollars respectively.

Shockingly, most of the credit facilities involve non-collateralised loans and huge loans with very minimal security.

One of the most bizarre developments at the Bank has to do with the fact that GCB advanced four different kinds of huge credit facilities to one client (name withheld) on the same date and time, August 5, 2015.

This includes a long-term loan of GHC2,756,250.00, medium-term loan of GHC 4,700,000.00, an overdraft of GHC5,000,000  and a guarantee of GHC2,000,000.

Another client (name withheld) was also granted a revolving short-term loan of  $3,500,000 dollars, a short-term loan of  GHC3,850,000 and another short-term loan of  $2,000,000.00 on the same day, (22/02/2016).

This client had a personal guarantee and a property reportedly worth 2 million dollars as collateral.

Another client, (name withheld,) was also granted an overdraft of GHC600, 000,00 and a seed fund guarantee of  GHC40,000,000. Assignment of receivables up to GHC100, 000,000 during the 2015/2016 cocoa season was stated as security held.

These developments have aroused the interest of National Security, which commenced investigation into the matter recently.

Meanwhile, pressure is still mounting on Mr Owiredu to step down as Credit Committee Chairman to save the Bank from total collapse.

Ghana pegs cocoa price per bag at Gh¢475

Government has announced an increment in cocoa price per bag from Gh¢425 to Gh¢475 effective October 1, 2016.

A deputy Finance and Economic Planning Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson, announced the 2016/17 cocoa price at the 2016 Cocoa Day celebrations at Tepa in the Ahafo Ano North District of the Ashanti Region.

The event was on the theme: “Transforming the Cocoa Sector for Economic Growth -The Role of the Youth.”

The new price represents 77.45 per cent increment.

The government is hopeful the increment will spur farmers on to increase production in the 2016/2017 cocoa season.

Mr. Forson said the change in producer price was higher than the percentage change in the world price of cocoa, and higher than the new producer price of Ivory Coast.

Licensed buying companies are to ensure that farmers are paid at the time of the sale of their produce, 475 cedis per bag of 64 kg gross weight, he noted.

He was of the view that the new price would also help minimise smuggling of the beans to neighboring Ivory Coast.

The Supreme Court has summoned the owner of Accra-based Montie FM, the two panelists who threatened judges, and the host of the show on which the threat was made.

The order which was issued by the Chief Justice in a handwritten note did not come with a date, as the court sat Tuesday, Starr News’ Wilberforce Asare reported.

It came after a private citizen Richard Asante Yeboah went to court following threats on the lives of judges in the country by Alistair Nelson and Godwin Ako Gunn.

The two panelists who were interrogated by the BNI on Sunday, threatened to assassinate some justices of the Supreme Court in a radio discussion.

One of the panelists on the programme is reported to have said: “I know where the judges live in Accra, I can show you. I know their quarters, the Supreme Court judges. I also know the High Court judges. Yes, I’m telling you, God has a way to show…If they like, they should bring it on.

“It will start in their residences, I’m telling you, in their neighborhood. When we finish them, then it will be over. Then we will come and rule our nation because they don’t wish the nation well.”

Their comments have been widely condemned by majority of Ghanaians including the Ghana Bar Association and other Civil Society Organizations.

Three persons were also injured in a related accident.

The deceased, identified as Captain Maxwell Afful, a Naval Officer, 55, was said to be travelling from Mankessim to Takoradi around 2200 hours.

Superintendent Godfred Asare, the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Police Commander, told the GNA that the deceased on reaching the spot tried to turn to a nearby washing bay but crashed into the truck, with registration number WR 831 P, which was carrying copra, and was travelling from the Western Region to Nigeria.

He said the Police, with the support of the Elmina Fire Service, had a hectic time removing the body from the mangled saloon car.

The Truck, which fell on its side in the middle of the road at the accident spot, caused both vehicular and human traffic as the way was diverted and also, a lot of residents trooped to the place to catch a glimpse.

Whilst the traffic was being controlled by the police, another Mercedes Benz Cargo truck, carrying beams and scraps, and travelling from the Takoradi direction, was signaled to slow down but the driver failed to stop.

However, on seeing the accident truck in the middle of the road it veered off and crashed into a stationary taxi cab on the shoulder of the road, he said.

It somersaulted and hit another taxi cab with two passengers on board, which was in a curve awaiting direction from the Police, injuring the three in the process.

Supt Asare said the taxi driver was on admission at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH), while the two passengers had been treated and discharged.

The body of the Captain has been deposited at the CCTH.
